Teeth Extractions

Restoring the Mouth to a Healthy Condition

Tooth decay, cavities and crowding are some of the most common dental problems. While we will try to save your any affected teeth, there are some instances when tooth extraction is the only option.

Sometimes our patients will need a tooth extracted due to decay or crowding. It is a natural process and nothing to be worried about. When you come in to visit our office, we’ll do everything we can to make you feel relaxed and welcome! We want you to know we care about your health.

Is your tooth causing you problems? Are you suffering from tooth decay or a cavity? Is your wisdom tooth causing you pain? Our priority is to save your tooth. We have several options that can benefit you. But, if your tooth is beyond repair, we may need to extract it. We will do everything we can to make you feel at ease during your appointment.

What to Expect with Tooth Extraction

Since tooth extraction can be uncomfortable, we will administer localized anesthesia so your procedure will be quick and painless.

Our dental team will then give you some instructions to help you heal faster. The following are a few things to remember:

  • A little bit of bleeding is normal.
  • If you experience swelling, apply an ice pack to the affected area for 15 minutes at a time.
  • Try warm compresses for any soreness or stiffness of the jaw.
  • Your dentist might recommend pain medication, depending on your situation.
  • Don’t smoke or use any tobacco products for 48 hours.
  • Avoid straws for at least 24 hours.
  • When you brush and floss, don’t clean the teeth directly surrounding the extraction.
  • Rinse with warm salt water 24 hours after the extraction. This will help to keep the area clean.
  • When you feel like eating again, eat soft foods for the first few days.

BEFORE & AFTER

Are you worried about the health or condition of one or more of your teeth? Don’t hesitate to call us about a problematic tooth. We make every effort to save your tooth before extracting it and will help you get back to your life with no more dental pain.

Post-Extraction Care

Call us if you experience a dry socket or have any other questions following your appointment. If you don’t take care of your mouth, you could disturb the tissues that are trying to heal, and a dry socket could occur. This exposes bone to the air and can be painful. Call us if:

  • You have a fever, chills or redness.
  • You have trouble swallowing.
  • Your bleeding is uncontrollable or continues to bleed after 24 hours post extraction.
  • The extraction site is extremely painful.
  • Your swelling gets worse.
  • Your tongue, chin or lips feel numb three to four hours after the procedure.

Other Options Besides Extraction

Every tooth decay or pain does not necessarily mean a tooth needs to be extracted. Our experienced dentists will strive to save your teeth before choosing to extract them. We also offer options for filling in gaps between your teeth, including dental bridges and dental implants. Ask us about smile restoration while visiting our office.
